연방 검찰이 달라스(Dallas) 소재 병원에 환자를 불법으로 몰아주고 리베이트를 받은 혐의로 유죄를 선고 받은 의사 7명에게 1700만여달러를 반환할 것을 요구하는 벌금형을 구형했습니다.
어제, 해당 검찰은 7명의 의사가 달라스의 포리스트 파크 메디컬 센터(Forest Park Medical Center)로 돈이 될 만한 환자들을 몰아 주는 보험 사기를 2억달러의 리베이트를 대가로 병원 관리자들과 공모했다고 성명을 통해 밝혔습니다.
피해 환자들은 사보험 가입자들로서 이들이 가입한 보험이 고가의 의료 서비스를 전반적으로 보장하는 점 때문에 해당 사기 범죄에 이용된 것으로 전해졌습니다.
검찰은 환자들을 몰아 준 의사 7명이 불법 행위에 대한 대가로 컨설팅 사례금 또는 마케팅 기금이라는 위장된 명목으로 돈을 받았으며, 해당 돈을 개인 사치를 위해 사용했다고 밝혔습니다.
한편 이들 7명의 의사들은 이번 구형에 앞서, 지난 4월, 리베이트와 공모, 뇌물 혐의에 대해 유죄 판결을 받았습니다.
