신학기를 맞아 어린이들이 등교하면서 집에 있던 총을 들고 오는 사례가 발생해 학교에 초비상이 걸렸습니다.
어제(1일) CNN의 보도에 따르면 지난달 31일 오전 텍사스 남부 코퍼스크리스티의 존 F. 케네디 초등학교에 만 네 살짜리 남자 어린이가 장전된 권총을 들고 등교했습니다.
학교 측은 이 어린이가 총을 소지한 채 교내를 돌아다닌다는 신고를 받고 즉시 이동 제한 조처를 내렸으며, 교내 경찰이 출동해 어린이에게서 권총을 압수했습니다.
문제의 권총은 어린이의 부모 것이었는데, 경찰은 아이가 총기에 접근할 수 있도록 방치했고 아이를 유기하거나 위험에 빠뜨린 두 개의 혐의로 30세 남성인 아이의 아버지를 체포했습니다. 후자에 대해 유죄 판결이 내려질 경우 최대 2년의 징역형이 선고될 수 있습니다.
코퍼스크리스티 경찰은 “모든 총이 장전되어 있지 않고 방아쇠는 잠겨있는 채로, 안전한 곳에 총기와 탄약이 함께 보관되어야 한다”며 “보관함 열쇠는 아이들이 접근할 수 없고 무기와 먼 곳에 둬야 한다”고 총기 관리의 중요성을 강조했습니다.
