Carel Fabritius (1622–1654) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and one of Rembrandt’s most talented pupils. His self-portrait from 1645, housed in the Boymans Museum (now Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen), is a striking example of his unique approach to portraiture, differing significantly from the style of his master.
The portrait presents a calm yet introspective young man, possibly in his early twenties. His gaze is direct, yet there is an air of quiet confidence and curiosity, reflecting his emerging identity as an independent artist. Unlike Rembrandt’s dramatic use of chiaroscuro, Fabritius employs softer lighting, allowing for a more naturalistic effect.
