This is a Felt & Tarrant Comptometer, a key-driven mechanical calculator. It was the first commercially successful key-driven mechanical calculator, patented in the USA by Dorr E. Felt in 1887.
Comptometers were primarily designed for fast and accurate addition, but skilled operators could also perform subtraction, multiplication, and division.
The machine operates by pressing keys, with each key adding its value to the accumulator immediately, allowing a skilled operator to input digits simultaneously using multiple fingers.
They were widely used in accounting and business from the late 19th century into the 1970s, remaining in some specialized use into the 1990s before being made obsolete by electronic calculators and computers.
The name "Comptometer" was a trade name but became a generic term for this class of device
