LA 고층건물에 스프링클러 설치해야

어제 화재가 발생한 브렌트우드 지역의 고층건물에는 소화용 스프링클러가 설치돼있지 않았던 것으로 밝혀졌습니다.

이에 LA시내 모든 고층 주거건물에 소화용 스프링클러 설치를 의무화해야 한다는 안건이 재추진되고 있습니다.

LA소방국에 따르면 어제 오전 8시 37분쯤 브렌트우드 인근 11740 윌셔 블러바드에 위치한 25층짜리 아파트인 베링턴 플라자 6층에서 불이 시작됐습니다.

건물에는 240 유닛에 339명의 입주민들이 거주하고 있으며 화재로 13명이 부상을 입었습니다.

현재 LA시내에는 1943년부터 1974년 사이에 세워진 주거용 고층 건물 가운데 55개가 소화용 스프링클러 설치 의무화 대상에 포함되지 않습니다.

이번에 화재가 발생한 베링턴 플라자 역시 제외 대상으로, 소화용 스프링클러가 설치돼 있지 않던 것으로 밝혀졌습니다.

지난 2013년도 화재 이후로 아파트가 소화용 스프링클러를 설치했어야 한다고 주장하고 있습니다.

해당 아파트에서는 지난 2013년도에도 화재가 발생해 8명이 부상하고 수십여명이 퇴거된 바 있습니다.

LA시의회는 소화용 스프링클러 설치를 확대하고자 수차례 추진했지만 건물주들의 반발에 부딪혀 통과되지 못했습니다.

건물주들은 소화용 스프링클러를 설치하는 비용이 너무 비싸기 때문에 렌트비를 올릴 수 밖에 없다고 반발했습니다.

하지만 마이크 보닌 시의원이 오는 31일 소화용 스프링클러 설치 의무화에 대한 안건을 재추진할 것으로 알려지면서 이번에는 통과될 수 있을지 귀추가 주목되고 있습니다.
