트럼프 대통령이 10일 존 볼턴 백악관 국가안보보좌관을 전격 경질했다.
지난해 3월 22일 임명돼 백악관에 입성한 이래 약 1년 6개월 만의 불명예 하차이다.
트럼프 행정부 내 대표적인 ‘슈퍼 매파’로, 마이크 폼페이오 국무장관과 함께 외교·안보 ‘투톱’으로 꼽혀온 볼턴 보좌관의 교체가 현실화함에 따라 내부 ‘파워 게임’의 향배와 맞물려 트럼프 행정부의 대북노선 기조에도 영향을 미칠 것으로 보여 주목된다.
당장 ‘힘의 무게추’가 폼페이오 장관 및 그가 진두지휘하는 국무부 라인 쪽으로 기우는 게 아니냐는 관측과 함께 한층 유연한 대북노선에 힘이 실리는 게 아니냐는 전망도 나온다.
트럼프 대통령은 이날 트위터를 통해 “나는 지난밤 존 볼턴에게 그가 일하는 것이 백악관에서 더는 필요하지 않다고 알렸다”고 밝혔다.
트럼프 대통령은 경질 배경과 관련, “행정부에 있는 다른 사람들이 그랬듯, 나는 그의 많은 제안에 대해 강하게 의견을 달리했다”고 말했다.
그러면서 “나는 존에게 사직서를 요구했다”며 그 사직서가 이날 오전 자신에게 전달됐다고 밝혔다.
트럼프 대통령은 “나는 그의 봉직에 대해 감사하게 생각한다”며 다음 주 새로운 국가안보 보좌관을 지명할 것이라고 말했다.
트럼프 대통령은 이번에도 어김없이 ‘트윗 경질’ 방식으로 볼턴 보좌관의 ‘해임’을 공개적으로 통보했다.
