뉴저지 모리스 카운티에 위치한 맨드햄(Mendham) 골프 클럽에서 A형 간염 바이러스 집단 감염 사례가 최초 보고된 것은 지난 달 5일이었습니다.
카운티 보건 당국의 역학 조사 결과 6월 9일에서 30일 사이 골프장을 방문한 이용객들 중 골프 클럽 내에서 판매하는 음식을 먹은 사람들이 동일한 바이러스에 감염된 것으로 밝혀졌습니다.
총 27명에 달하는 이용객들이 A형 간염에 걸린 것으로 밝혀진 가운데, 이들 감염자 중 한 명이 최근 사망했다고 카운티 보건 당국은 밝혔습니다.
사망자의 신원은 공개되지 않은 가운데, 직접적인 사망 원인이 A형 간염 바이러스 때문인지의 여부는 아직 명확히 밝혀지지 않았습니다.
다만 골프장 내 식자재에서 발견된 해당 바이러스가 감염일 기준 최대 50일의 잠복기를 가지고 있어 추가 발병자가 발생할 수도 있다고 당국은 밝혔습니다. 일반적으로 A형 간염 바이러스의 잠복기는 최소 15일에서 최대 50일에 달하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
맨드햄 타운쉽 보건 당국에 따르면 골프장 내 음식 취급 담당자가 과거 전염성이 매우 높은 희귀 질병 병력이 있었던 것으로 밝혀졌습니다.
해당 골프장 내 음식 판매 매점은 위생 장갑 사용 등 음식 취급 시 위생을 잘 준수해온 것으로 알려졌었는데요. 갑작스런 바이러스 집단 감염에 사망자까지 발생하자 지역 주민들의 불안감이 높아지고 있습니다.
