유밸디 교육구, 롭 초교 총격 난사 부실 대응한 경찰 서장 해임

지난 5월에 발생한 유밸디 롭 초등학교 총기난사 사건 당시 한 시간 넘게 총격범을 제압하지 않고 방관해 인명 피해를 키웠다는 비난을 받아온 경찰서장이 결국 해임됐습니다. 신한나 기자입니다. 

<기자> 유밸디 교육구 위원회는 어제(24일) 투표를 거쳐 만장일치로 피트 아리돈도 교육구 경찰서장을 해고했습니다. 아리돈도 서장은 지난 5월 24일 유밸디 롭 초등학교에서 어린이 19명과 교사 2명이 사망한 총기 참사와 관련해 해임된 첫 번째 인물이 됐습니다. 

이 사건으로 자녀를 잃은 부모들은 투표 현장에서 눈물을 글썽이거나 아리돈도 서장을 겨냥해 ‘비겁자’라고 외치는 등 흥분이 가시지 않은 모습을 보이기도 했습니다. 한 학부모는 “아리돈도 서장의 해고만으로 끝나서는 안 되며, 이것은 오랜 과정의 시작일 뿐”이라며 추가 징계를 요구했습니다.

아리돈도 서장은 18세 총격범이 교실에서 범행을 저지르는 동안 진압 명령을 지시하지 않은 채 인력과 무기 지원을 기다리며 대기했고, 나중에는 자신이 현장 지휘관이라는 사실을 몰랐다고 변명해 유족과 지역사회의 공분을 샀습니다. 

이에 유밸디 교육청은 6월 22일 아리돈도 서장에게 정직에 해당하는 행정 휴가 명령을 내렸습니다. 이어 할 해럴 유밸디 교육감은 7월 아리돈도 서장의 해임을 추진했으나, 서장 변호인의 요청으로 결정을 연기했습니다. 

변호인은 이번 투표가 열리기 전에 아리돈도 서장이 시간을 허비한 지휘관이 아니라 침착한 결정으로 다른 학생을 살린 용감한 경찰이었다고 주장하는 편지를 배포했으나, 해고된 뒤에는 별다른 반응을 내놓지 않았습니다. 

한편 학교 관계자는 “다음 달 6일 개학해도 롭 초등학교 교정은 사용되지 않고, 학생들은 유밸디의 다른 곳에 마련된 임시 교실로 등교할 것”이라고 말했습니다. 

앞서 텍사스주 하원 조사 위원회는 지난달 조사 보고서를 통해 유밸디 초등학교 참사 때 경찰 376명이 출동했으나 대응에 완전히 실패했다면서 “경찰의 형편없는 의사 결정과 리더십의 공백을 확인했다”고 지적했습니다. 달라스 DKnet 뉴스 신한나입니다.
