<기자> 일요일인 어제부터 북텍사스에 강한 소나기성 폭우가 내리기 시작했습니다. 이번 비는 오늘 가장 많이 내릴 것으로 예상되며, 소나기성 폭우는 내일까지 지속된 후 잠시 소강 상태를 보이다가 이번 주말에 다시 내릴 것으로 예상됩니다.
연방 기상청(NWS)은 어제 밤과 오늘 오전 사이에 북텍사스 대부분 지역에 2인치~ 5인치의 비가 내릴 것으로 보이며, 일부 지역에선 강수량이 8인치가 넘을 수도 있다고 전했습니다.
북텍사스 대부분 지역에는 어제부터 홍수주의보가 발령됐습니다. 20번 인터스테이트(I-20) 남쪽 지역에 내려진 홍수 주의보는 오늘 오전 7시까지 확대됐고 나머지 지역들은 오늘 정오까지로 확대됐습니다.
이에 지난 주말, 심각한 폭우 상황에 대비해 각 지역 초동대응 기관들도 준비에 들어갔습니다. 포트워스(Fort Worth) 소방국은 불어나는 물로 인한 운전자 고립 가능성이 큰 지역들을 중심으로 모니터링에 들어갔으며 홍수 피해 다발 지역을 이용하는 주민들에게 다른 통행로를 이용할 것을 당부했습니다.
제임스 맥메스(James McAmes) 관계자는 물이 2피트로 불어나도 차량이 휩쓸려 갈 수 있다며, 경고 사인과 경고등이 작동할 때는 안내에 따라 줄 것을 촉구했습니다.
한편 그렉 애봇(Greg Abbott) 주지사는 지난 20일(토), 350여개 지역 비상대응 책임자들과 함께 주 전역의 홍수 위험성을 모니터링했습니다. 이날 회의에서 홍수 사태에 대비한 지원 논의가 이뤄졌습니다. 텍사스 비상관리국(TDEM)은 250여명 이상의 인력과 100개 이상의 장비를 사전배치했습니다. 달라스 DKnet 뉴스 서장원입니다.
