유밸디 롭 초등학교 총기난사 현장에서 늑장 대응한 경찰서장이 해임에 직면했습니다.
텍사스 남부학교 위원회는 어제(20일) 5월 유밸디 롭 초교총기 난사에 제때 대응하지 않았다는 이유로 피트 아리돈도 유밸디 교육구 경찰서장의 해임을 검토할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
사건 당시 아이들이 신고 전화를 하고 구조를 기다리는 1시간 14분 동안 경찰은 교실에 진입하지 않은 채 복도에서 머뭇거려 화를 키웠다는 비판이 거셉니다. 특히 유밸디 주민은 아리돈도 서장의 늑장 대응을 비난하며 그의 사임을 요구해 왔습니다.
아리돈도 서장은 최근 임명됐던 시 위원 자리에서 이미 물러났고, 교육구 경찰서장 업무와 관련해서는 휴직계는 낸 상태입니다.
한편 주민들은 당시 학교 복도에서 서성이기만 하는 모습이 카메라에 찍힌 경찰관을 상대로도 책임을 물을 것을 요구 중입니다. 당시 현장에는 400명에 가까운 경찰이 출동했지만, 이들은 77분이 지나서야 총격범과 맞닥뜨렸습니다.
텍사스 주 경찰은 현장에 출동했던 경찰관이 더 빨리 총격범과 맞서지 않은 게 법이나 수칙을 어겼는지 조사에 착수했습니다.
