북텍사스 전역에서 계속되고 있는 기록적 수준의 고온 현상으로 인해 일부 야외 행사들이 안전을 우려한 주최측의 결정으로 연기되거나 전면 취소됐습니다.
해당 지역 전체를 뜨겁게 달구고 있는 고온의 날씨 때문에 연방기상청(NWS)이 지난 주 목요일(7일)부터 최소 토요일(9일)까지 사흘간 심각한 수준의 폭염경보를 즉시 발령했습니다.
105도가 넘는 고온과 110이 넘는 폭염 지수를 보이는 심각한 폭염이 다양한 야외 행사들의 주최자들에게 가장 큰 걱정거리인 것으로 전해졌습니다.
어빙(Irving) 시의 관계자 메간 고든(Megan Gordon)은 지난 주 금요일(8일) 헤리티지 파크(Heritage Park)에서 이른 저녁 시각에 시작될 예정이었던 금요 야외 영화의 밤 행사를 관객 안전을 우려해 행사 시각을 늦추기로 결정했다고 밝혔습니다.
고든은 폭염주의보가 발령된 것을 보고 원래 저녁 6시 30분에 시작하기로 계획돼 있던 해당 행사를 일몰 후인 밤 8시로 늦춰 시작하기로 했다고 설명했습니다.
해당 행사에는 보통 관객이 가장 많이 들면 350명에 이르기도 하지만 지난 주 금요일에는 관객 수가 아주 많이 줄었습니다. 하지만 쉐니스 퍼킨스(Sheniece Perkins)라는 여성은 해당 행사장에 도착한 뒤 생각이 바뀌었다면서 아이들을 위한 외출이었는데 아이들이 폭염의 날씨 속에서도 공원 주변을 뛰어다녔다고 말했습니다.
캐롤튼(Carrollton)의 경우엔 지난 주 금요일 해당 시 당국이 다운타운에서 열릴 예정이었던 7월의 크리스마스(Christmas in July) 행사를 추후 재개 계획 없이 아예 취소했습니다. 한 주민은 해당 행사를 기대해온 아이들의 실망이 크겠지만 안전을 우려한 결정이라는 것을 이해한다고 말했습니다.
