<기자> 그렉 애봇 텍사스 주지사는 어제(29일) 기자회견을 갖고 멕시코에서 텍사스로 들어오는 트럭 검사를 재개하도록 명령했다고 밝혔습니다. 애봇 주지사의 이같은 조치는 샌안토니오 트레일러 밀입국자 참사 때문으로 이번 참사의 희생자는 모두 53명으로 늘었습니다.
애봇 주지사는 밀입국자들을 태운 트럭이 입국 첫 관문인 국경 수비대의 검사를 빠져나간 것에 대해 연방 기관에 충분한 인력이 부족하기 때문이라며, 조 바이든 대통령이 행동하지 않으면 이같은 불법 이민자들의 사망은 계속 증가할 것이라고 비판했습니다.
앞서 지난 4월 초, 애봇 주지사는 국경 안전과 관련하여 바이든 행정부가 실패했다고 선언하며, 텍사스로 넘어오는 국경 지대에서 트럭 검사를 명령했습니다. 하지만 이는 연방 당국의 검사에 추가되면서 국경을 넘나드는 트럭들의 적체가 크게 증가했습니다.
한편 애봇 주지사의 조치에 따라 주 공공안전부 DPS는 밀입국자들을 찾아내고 체포하기 위해 각각 20명의 기병으로 구성된 2개의 전담팀을 구성할 예정입니다. 또한 밀입국자들의 이동 경로인 리오 그란데 강을 따라 더 많은 철조망을 배치하고, 추가 보트 팀을 배치할 계획입니다.
애봇 주지사는 주 경찰과 주 방위군이 가능한 많은 밀입국자들의 불법 월경을 차단할 것이라고 말했습니다. 애봇 주지사는 주방위군이 일 년여 전 국경 지역에 배치된 이후 국경을 건너는 2만 2000명의 이주민들을 되돌려 보냈다고 밝혔습니다.
미 관세국경보호청(US Customs and Border Protection)에 따르면 작년 9월 30일로 끝난 지난 회기에 남서부 국경지대에서 557명의 밀입국자들이 사망했습니다. 달라스 DKnet 뉴스 서장원입니다.
