미 프로야구(MLB)에 도전하는 왼손 투수 양현종이 텍사스 레인저스 구단과 계약을 타진하고 있습니다.
달라스 모닝뉴스의 에번 그랜트 기자는 어제(11일) 트위터 계정에서 양현종과 텍사스 구단의 계약이 임박했다는 트윗을 공유한 뒤 텍사스 구단이 2014시즌 후 포스팅시스템(비공개 경쟁입찰)을 거쳐 메이저리그 진출을 타진하던 양현종에게 입단을 제안했지만 거절당했다고 소개했습니다. 이어 양현종이 올 시즌 텍사스 선발 로테이션의 또 다른 선택지가 될 수 있다고 내다봤습니다.
MLB닷컴의 뎁스 차트를 보면, 텍사스에 확실한 4∼5선발 후보는 보이진 않습니다. 텍사스 레인저스는 오프시즌에 일본프로야구 닛폰햄 파이터스에서 뛴 아리하라 고헤이를 2년, 계약총액 600만∼700만 달러에 영입했습니다. 또 베테랑 우완 선발 랜스 린을 시카고 화이트삭스로 보내고 한국계 투수인 데인 더닝을 데려왔습니다.
선발 투수 후보 중 왼손은 빅리그 경험이 적은 웨스 벤저민, 콜비 올러드 등 둘 뿐이어서 KBO리그에서 통산 147승을 거둔 양현종이 텍사스 선발진의 대안이 될 수 있습니다.
한편 양현종은 소속팀 KIA 타이거즈의 잔류 제안을 정중하게 거절하고 빅리그 도전을 선언했습니다. 그는 스플릿 계약(메이저리그와 마이너리그에 있을 때 연봉이 다른 계약)도 불사하고 오로지 40인 로스터에 포함해 달라는 조건만 내걸었는데, 빅리그에서 뛸 기회만 주어진다면 실력으로 경쟁을 이겨내겠다며 배수진을 쳤습니다.
