KOWIN 시카고, 한인동포 2세 여학생들을 위한 장학금 지원
‘시카고 호프 2020 코로나19 특별 장학생 선발’
신청 마감 9월 30일…총 10명의 여학생들에게 각각 1천 달러 지급
세계한민족 여성네트워크(KOWIN) 시카고 지부(회장 박현주)가 한인동포 여학생들에게 대규모 장학금을 수여한다.
코로나19 여파로 어려움을 겪는 시카고지역 한인동포 가정을 돕기 위해 마련된 이번 장학금은 올 가을학기 대학에 입학하거나 재학 중인 총 10명의 여학생들을 대상으로 1인당 1천 달러의 장학금이 지급된다.
코윈 시카고지부는 25일(화)자 보도자료를 통해 ‘시카고 호프 2020 장학금‘(Chicago HOPE 2020 Scholarship)은 우수한 성적과 리더십을 지녔지만 재정적 지원이 필요한 대학 진학 예정 고등학생들이나 대학생들을 돕기 위한 것”으로 “학생들을 미래의 지도자로 키우자는 취지로 장학사업을 진행하게 됐다”고 밝혔다.
이어 박현주 회장은 “이번 장학금이 학생들에게 자신의 미래를 펼쳐나가기 위한 작지만 큰 희망이 되기를 바란다”고 덧붙였다.
보도자료에 따르면 이번 장학사업은 코윈 시카고 지부 장학사업 실현을 위해 4년 전 출범한 비영리 시카고 코윈재단 (Chicago Korean Women’s Foundation)의 지원으로 이뤄진다. 시카고 코윈 재단의 박이혜련 이사장은 “이미 지난 3년간 중국연변과학기술대학교에 재학 중인 한인 여학생 27명에게도 유사 장학금을 성공적으로 지급해 왔고, 특히 이번에는 코로나19여파로 재정적 타격이 큰 시카고 지역의 한인 2세들에게 도움을 줄 수 있게 돼 더욱 보람이 크다”고 말했다.
코윈은 한국 여성 가족부산하 단체로 2001년 창설돼 세계 170여 개국에서 한민족 여성들의 네트워크를 형성하고 있으며, 2020년 현재 26개국에 지부를 두고 있다.
코윈 시카고지부는 지난 2003년 설립된 이래 한인대학생들과 젊은 커리어우먼들에게 멘토링과 리더쉽 프로그램 등을 제공해 차세대 리더들을 육성하고 있으며, 주류사회와 연계해 한국의 위상을 높이는 민간외교 활동에 전력해 왔다.
이번 ‘시카고 호프 2020 장학금’ 신청을 희망하는 여학생들은 지역과 한인사회에 대한 비전을 담은 짧은 에세이 등 서류를 제출해야 한다. 신청 마감은 9월 30일까지이며, 온라인링크 (https://forms.gle/LC2e4gXD5fRxDxr96) 를 통해 제출하면 된다.
